2006 Zinfandel

2006 Zinfandel

Although Caymus Vineyards is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon wines, the Wagner family also produces a small amount of Zinfandel, which was a favorite of Caymus co-founder Charlie Wagner. In many ways, Zinfandel is a quintessential California wine. It was one of the early varieties to be planted in Northern California by immigrants from Europe. And while the grape may have had its origins in Europe under different names, California Zinfandel is unique and distinctive. We get our grapes from some exceptional vineyards in the Napa Valley. Our primary site is Butala Vineyard in St. Helena, where brothers Al and Ernie Butala grow old, crown pruned vines on highly-graveled soil. Also included in the blend is some Petite Sirah, a traditional partner to Zinfandel. The wine lots were aged separately in a combination of French and American oak barrels, over 70 percent of them seasoned rather than new to maintain the dominance of the fruit. Our Zinfandel is not distributed nationally, but is offered for sale in our tasting room and online as a continuation of a family tradition.

Tasting notes:

A deep, purplish-red color, this vintage offers a rich raspberry aroma which includes ripeness and rustic qualities. Abundant black cherry and plum are full, forward and richly-flavored, with the zinfandel’s high acidity balanced by fruit.
