2005 Special Selection CS NOTES
2005 Special Selection
The wine we designate as Special Selection begins in grapes with a beautifully ripe flavor and the promise of deep color and texture. We found these in California’s record year for grape yields that went from winter floods to an early budbreak and a long, dry growing season.
Special Selection is always made with 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with top-quality fruit from various sites we farm in the Napa Valley. We have such a variety of micro-climates and vineyard blocks to choose from -- reaching from the Valley floor to hillside vineyards -- that it’s possible to blend the essence of the appellation in the bottle.
The 2005 vintage marks 30 years since the release of the first Special Selection. The idea was to produce a wine that was a little darker, with slightly more structured tannins and the potential to age a bit longer than our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon; a wine in complete balance.
Although our wine-making methods have evolved somewhat since the initial release, this vintage shows we have reached a consistency of style and quality that easily meets the hopes we had from the beginning.
Tasting notes:
Deep, almost purple crimson color. Concentrated aromas of cassis and plum lead to flavors of dark berry fruits, ripe currant and cocoa, framed by a slightly toasty oak. This incredibly rich and full-bodied wine shows well-structured, silky tannins and a long, velvety finish.
